Women's issues in therapy encompass a wide range of topics that specifically relate to the challenges, experiences, and life situations that women may face. These issues can be emotional, psychological, physical, or relational, and they may be influenced by a variety of factors, such as gender expectations, societal norms, reproductive health, and unique life stages (like pregnancy, menopause, and aging)
You don’t have to feel disconnected from yourself and others. Connection to who you are as a woman can assist in overall connection to self and others.
Gender expression is a social construct that must be uncovered. Women are often plagued by social expectations in terms of how they dress, speak, behave and what they chose to engage in. Therapy is a space to challenge what may have been imposed on a woman and allow for her to find what she personally connects to. When a woman determines what she is connected to; she is then empowered to express herself.Gender expression-understanding and embracing femininity in terms of what the individual is comfortable with which may look different by the day or even the hour!
Sexism and discrimination
Gender roles have the capacity to shape women in harmful and helpful ways. It is important to understand how a woman sees herself in various roles (e.g. mom, wife, daughter, sister aunt etc) and how it affects her relationally in the world.
Body image issues related to how women should look in terms of size and shape which can lead to eating disorders and/or disordered eating.
Women’s bodies have the ability to do amazing things, such as bring life into the world. However, this can be a source of grief when women’s bodies change or they are unable to conceive. From the start of menstruation women’s bodies are in a state of change physically which can also lead to emotional changes. At a young age, some young women develop negative relationships with their bodies when their bodies change. They may even resent that they have a period. This is the first time in which a young woman may feel like their body is out of control which can lead to grief, shame, and anger.
A woman may feel a second wave of losing control when they try to conceive and are unable to conceive, or experience a miscarriage. Conception and pregnancy is another time in which a woman may feel a loss of control. Rapidly her body starts changing to accommodate a new life. Her body experiences changes in shape, size, mobility and energy levels. A woman may experience changes in libido as a result of these changes.
Women may experience postpartum issues after a child is born. They may struggle with navigating how to manage their life and how their sense of identity may have changed in lieu of becoming a mother. There may be fears about the wellness and safety of their child, or feelings of loss related to the birth of the child.
Menopause and periomenopause may also elicit grief as a woman navigates grief related to not being able to conceive, physical changes (e.g. changes in libido, weight, body shape, pain during sex, brain fog and memory changes). Having a hysterectomy can also induce menopause symptoms. Some women may feel like they are not a woman with the absence of hormones and/or physical anatomy changes.
As women age their bodies change which may influence what they physically are able to do and how they see themselves. Physical changes can lead to changes in libido, pain during sex. It can also lead to heightened struggles with body image that can lead to disordered eating. Therapy is a space where this grief can be identified and worked through.
Empty nest- A woman’s role and her sense of identity and/or purpose can change when her children leave the home. This is also a time in which marital struggles emerge in lieu of the changing dynamics at home.
Merging what it means to be a woman encompasses societal expectations and cultural expectations. It precludes the importance of considering the impact of race, the presence of disability, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, and experiences of discrimination. All of these factors contribute to identity and how a woman sees herself.
