Abby Blackburn, LPC-Associate: Child & Teen Therapist in Frisco, TX

Under the supervision of Dr. Angela Peña, PhD, NCC, LPC-S

I help children, adolescents, and young adults navigate behavioral challenges, anxiety, and depression through a warm, CBT-based approach.

My Passion for Supporting Children and Teens

Every child deserves a space where they feel safe and accepted. I'm here to provide support and partner with your family to work toward positive, lasting change.

I've always known that I was meant to pursue a career that was focused on helping others. My interest in psychology and mental health began in middle school while I, like many others at that age, was navigating some of my own challenges. Later in life, during my time as a behavioral technician at a residential treatment facility, I fell in love with working with and helping children and adolescents. I found so much joy in building healthy, safe connections with clients and witnessing their growth, which solidified my decision to pursue a career as a mental health counselor.

Who I Work With: I primarily work with children and adolescents experiencing behavioral challenges, anxiety, and depression. I can also work with young adults and athletes.

My Therapeutic Style

Therapeutic Orientation: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the foundation of my approach, and I incorporate skills from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).

What to Expect in Sessions: I strive to create a safe, welcoming environment where my clients feel comfortable being themselves. My goal is to build a strong connection and make therapy a meaningful experience, and I enjoy incorporating activities, creative interventions, and clients' personal interests into sessions to do so.

Credentials & Background

  • Licensed Professional Counselor Associate (Texas), Supervised by Dr. Angela Peña, PhD, NCC, LPC-S
  • M.S., Professional Counseling – Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi
  • B.S., Biology – Henderson State University

Areas of Focus

  • Behavioral Challenges: I work with clients and their families to build emotion regulation and communication skills. I partner with clients to find their strengths and create plans to promote positive changes at home and school.
  • Anxiety and Depression: I support children and adolescents by creating a safe environment to explore their experiences. We will work to build coping skills and develop healthy strategies to manage difficult thoughts and emotions.
  • Social Skills: I work with children and adolescents to strengthen their social skills through exploration and practice. This allows clients to improve communication, develop healthy relationships, and navigate social challenges.

Get to Know Me

Outside of counseling, you will often find me next to my chihuahua, Moose. I also enjoy being outdoors, exploring new places, trying new crafts, spending quality time with friends, and reading. Sports have been a huge part of my life, so I'm also regularly keeping up with and watching my favorite teams (Go Chiefs!).

In My Clients' Words: Clients say that I am calm and easy to talk to. They appreciate that I take the time to get to know them and their interests. Many clients find that engaging in activities or games during sessions makes it easier to express themselves and build a strong therapeutic connection.
